Sculptra And Juvéderm: Two Injectables With Very Different Approaches

The vast majority of cosmetic services that are performed today involve some type of injectable. Dermal fillers represent one of the most popular anti-aging treatments of our time. These injectables correct lines, creases, and contour loss that occur over time as the fatty tissue, muscle, bone, and skin become thinner and thinner. Of the various dermal fillers that are available, Juvéderm may be the most well-known brand. Here, we compare this family of fillers with another injectable, Sculptra.

About Juvéderm

Juvéderm is not a single filler, it is a family of products. All are made with hyaluronic acid, a chemical that the body makes to maintain sufficient moisture in the skin. Without the necessary amount of hyaluronic acid, the skin deflates and thins. As a dermal filler, hyaluronic acid binds to water molecules to spot-correct various areas. Juvéderm is often used to smooth creases around the nose and mouth, to plump the lips, restore curves to the cheeks and jawline, and significantly reduce the appearance of undereye bags.

About Sculptra

Sculptra is an injectable, but we might not exactly call it a filler. This product is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a bio-stimulatory chemical that was initially approved to correct the facial deflation affecting HIV-positive patients. Unlike Juvéderm, Sculptra does not bind to any particular molecules in the skin. What it does is stimulate an increase in collagen production. The skin relies on collagen for firmness and form. However, the body significantly slows down its proliferation of this protein early in adulthood. The purpose of Sculptra, then, is to offset this slow rate of collagen regeneration to restore more youthful facial contours.

How Do Results Compare?

Comparing the results of Juvéderm and Sculptra is like comparing apples and oranges. The two are not intended to do the same thing. A benefit of Juvéderm is that rejuvenation occurs immediately. With several products available, Juvéderm can address numerous concerns with the ideal softness or structure. The results of treatment can last from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the product and area treated. Sculptra works with the body’s natural collagen-producing action. Two to three treatments are needed to achieve just the right amount of new collagen formation. Results occur gradually rather than instantaneously. However, they last two years or longer with a conservative touch-up schedule.
