Correction or Prevention: What’s Your Resolution?
- Posted on: Feb 15 2019
The new year is still young enough that our resolutions may be fresh in our minds. Our resolve to keep them, however, may have already begun to wane. Wherever you stand on your larger resolutions, those that pertain to your appearance – and your confidence in it – are probably still at the forefront of your mind. The good thing about beauty resolutions is that the can be easy to keep. What might hold you back is a lack of awareness about which treatments may work for you and what you really want to achieve. Here, we want to discuss how you can meet your need for correction or prevention with simple injectable treatments.
Botox and Dermal Fillers, the BFFs of the Beauty World
You may have heard of Botox and dermal fillers, or even the broader term of injectables, but still feel relatively uncertain about what various products actually do. We’ll clear this up here, which will help you understand why Botox and dermal fillers are the perfect pair.
Botox is referred to as a wrinkle reducer. This drug is categorized as a neuromodulator. That means it modulates, or reduces, certain neurotransmissions. Botox is used in muscle tissue that has become overly and persistently tensed. This happens by making certain facial expressions, such as squinting at a computer screen. When Botox is absorbed into the muscle, it binds to neuroreceptors and prevents them from receiving transmissions from the brain telling the muscle to contract. As a result, the muscle becomes relaxed and smooth for a period of months, until the body metabolizes the drug.
Dermal fillers do smooth certain lines and wrinkles, but these products are generally categorized as “volumizers.” Most dermal filler products are formulated with hyaluronic acid as their main or only ingredient. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that binds to water molecules in the body. It is present in the eyes and the joints as well as the skin. By introducing hyaluronic acid in the form of a dermal filler, we direct where we want water molecules to be secured. This could be in the lips to enhance their shape, in the cheeks to make them more prominent, or beneath creases around the nose and mouth to reduce their appearance.
Throughout the early life of injectables, these products were largely used to correct the signs of aging. Now, we are using them more frequently to prevent signs of aging around the eyes, nose, and mouth. The preventative approach may require less product, fewer visits, and less investment to ward off premature aging in the most natural way.
