Will Liposuction Remove Cellulite?

Woman's body

Unwanted fat is a problem that many people face at some point in their lifetime. According to statistics, nearly 80 percent of women can expect to see some dimpling in various parts of their bodies. Cellulite is a common problem that occurs when subcutaneous fat presses up against the connective fibers beneath the skin. Dimpling happens because these bands run from the skin inward toward deeper tissues rather than parallel to the surface.

If you’ve done any research on cellulite, what you may get stuck on is the relationship between dimpled skin and fat. Many people do this. If you’re a woman with cellulite, you can thank your genes, in part, because women naturally store more fat than men. This is why every woman, even the one who is very fit, is not immune to a few dimples here and there. While there is a connection between fat and cellulite, this is not the whole story. Because fat is not the whole story, one cannot rely on liposuction for the complete improvement of body contouring and cellulite reduction. Liposuction can only handle one of these problems.

Why Liposuction Is Not The Answer To Cellulite

Liposuction is a popular plastic surgery procedure for good reason. It is minimally invasive enough to be performed in the doctor’s office using local, injected anesthetic (though some still do this in an outpatient operating room). Liposuction is one of the best ways to reduce unwanted fat and change the body’s silhouette in a meaningful way. Nonsurgical options like CoolSculpting are advantageous but simply do not achieve the same degree of fat reduction as liposuction.

If liposuction removes extra subcutaneous fat, and cellulite is caused in part by fat, then why won’t liposuction get rid of cellulite? One reason is that cellulite is caused by fibrous bands beneath the skin and is influenced by the condition of the skin, as well. When the skin is loose and lax, cellulite may look more prominent.

Can Cellulite Be Treated?

Just because liposuction doesn’t work on cellulite doesn’t mean you have no options. We are pleased to offer two amazing cellulite treatments that have been widely used for years.

  • ThermiSmooth radiofrequency treatment targets the deeper layers of the skin to firm and tighten the surface. A series of treatments may be needed. Results can be maintained with a healthy lifestyle and periodic touch-ups.
  • Cellfina is a minimally invasive cellulite treatment that is performed with a local anesthetic. The procedure is conducted using a tiny, needle-like device. It works by releasing the fibrous bands beneath the skin. Periodic touch-ups may be needed to maintain smooth, dimple-free skin.
