Understanding Chemical Peels

In our practice, it’s important for us to be able to present different treatment options to our patients for every cosmetic concern that they may have.  For skin rejuvenation, one of the most common procedures that we have is chemical peels.  This is simply using chemicals that are applied to the skin in controlled amounts which results in a managed skin damage that triggers the body’s natural healing process.  This gives way to the production of new and healthier skin from the deepest layer resulting in new and healthier skin that our patients have always wanted.

Chemical peels are categorized into different types depending on how mild or severe our patient’s skin problems are.  It also depends on how deep we want the chemical to penetrate and the type of chemical that is used.  We always determine during consultation which type will work best to address our patients concerns taking into consideration of course other important factors such as contraindications and our patient’s medical condition.

Superficial peels are the mildest type of chemical peels and most often use glycolic acid as the active ingredient.  Medium peels uses the same chemicals used for superficial peels but are left on the skin for a longer period.  Deep peels penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and cause a second degree burn in order to trigger a more aggressive response for cell renewal to treat more advanced skin problems.
