Micro Needling with PRP
The body has an amazing capacity to heal wounds in the skin. It does this with the clotting function and growth factors present in blood platelets, and it does this by creating new collagen and elastin to heal the wound and rebuild the skin. What if you could create hundreds of microscopic wounds, which the body responds to with collagen production, and add in the growth factors and healing potential of blood platelets? You’d have microneedling with platelet-rich plasma, an amazing, easy-to-tolerate skin improvement treatment we offer at Behr Laser and Skin Care Center.
Why is collagen so important?
You don’t have to look far to find the culprit behind our skin developing lines and wrinkles as we age. It’s collagen. Collagen is the protein that creates a latticework under our skin, providing structural support and making our young skin firm and free of wrinkles. The problem is that every year after we celebrate our 20th birthday our body produces an additional one percentage point less collagen. By the time we’re 50 that means we are producing 30 percent less collagen than in our youth. That’s why our skin begins to sag and is prone to wrinkling. The goal is to get the body to build new supplies of collagen, and that’s what we do with microneedling.
How does microneedling work?
At Behr Laser & Skin Care Center, we use the SkinPen from Bellus Medical for our microneedling (more about that below). It features 14 tiny needles that move up and down as the pen is moved across the treatment areas. These needles penetrate the epidermis to a selected depth of up to 2 mm. This extends down into the top of the dermis layer of the skin, where collagen is produced.
When we move the SkinPen across your skin, it creates hundreds of microscopic punctures/channels down into the dermis. Because the microscopic punctures are surrounded by untouched skin, they begin to heal almost immediately. But the body perceives these as wounds and it initiates the wound-healing process — producing new supplies of collagen, elastin, and new skin cells. These are meant to repair the wounds, but in microneedling the wounds are basically fully healed in just a few hours, so the collagen and elastin simply improves the skin texture and firmness. These are the tenets of younger-looking skin.
At Behr, we add the benefit of platelet-rich plasma after your microneedling to enhance the procedure. This is the optimum time to apply PRP to the skin, as it can penetrate the outer epidermis.
What is the SkinPen?
The SkinPen was the first FDA-cleared, automated microneedling device. The SkinPen uses 14 stainless steel medical-grade needles to create hundreds of microscopic channels down through the epidermis. We can vary the penetration depth of the SkinPen needles, depending on the area being treated. These micro-injuries trigger a wound-healing response in the body, where healthy new skin cells and collagen are produced and sent to “heal” the perceived wounds. This happens despite the fact that the microscopic punctures heal fully in just a couple of hours.
What are the benefits of the SkinPen over other microneedling devices?
- SkinPen has clinical testing to prove its effectiveness for reducing acne scars and improving skin texture and quality.
- SkinPen was the first FDA-cleared microneedling device and has consistently set the industry standard.
- The microneedle penetration depth can be adjusted. This is especially important due to variations in skin depth.
- SkinPen is uniquely effective on the delicate areas around the eyes and around the mouth.
- Each treatment at Behr Laser & Skin Center uses a sterile, new, single-use SkinPen cartridge to eliminate the risk of infection.
- SkinPen has Bio-Sheath feature to protect against any cross contamination.
What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy?
You’ve probably heard of platelet-rich plasma, even if you don’t follow the aesthetic world. That’s because professional athletes have been using it for over a decade to help speed healing after injury or after surgery.
Platelets in human blood are amazing little healing powerhouses. In addition to their clotting ability, platelets have a series of growth factors in them that help heal wounds and regenerate damaged skin. In platelet-rich plasma (PRP), as the name implies, we concentrate the platelets for maximum healing and skin rejuvenation. Here’s how it works. We take a sample of your blood and place it in a centrifuge. We separate out the red blood cells. This leaves a concentrated mix of plasma, white blood cells, and blood platelets. Making PRP from your small blood sample takes just a few minutes.
How does PRP improve microneedling?
Because the SkinPen opens up hundreds of microscopic channels through the epidermis down into the dermis layer of the skin, it’s the perfect time to apply topical products, as they can easily get past the outer layer of the skin. PRP is the ultimate topical product. The growth factors and platelets can get down into the dermis and really get to work improving the skin in the area. PRP gives microneedling a real boost.
What can microneedling improve on my skin?
One nice thing about microneedling, as compared to various laser resurfacing procedures, is that it doesn’t cause hyperpigmentation, so it can be used on all skin types and tones.
These are skin problems microneedling can improve:
- Fine lines
- Uneven texture
- Stretch marks
- Acne scars
- Large pores
Would I be a good candidate for microneedling with PRP
There are no limitations for these microneedling with PRP treatments at Behr Laser & Skin Care. Just about anyone would benefit from its skin-improving process. You can have microneedling regardless of your skin color or skin type, as well, because it doesn’t cause hyperpigmentation, as many laser skin procedures can. Patients cannot have any skin infections or active skin cancer growths.
Where can I have microneedling with PRP done?
Microneedling can be used across the face and body. That’s one reason we use the SkinPen at Behr. We can adjust the depth of the microneedle penetration to match the area of the skin. For instance, skin on the forehead is much thinner than skin on the cheeks, so we adjust for both. We perform microneedling with PRP on these areas:
- Upper arms
- Backs of the hands
Is there recovery after microneedling?
Immediately after you leave our Fresno offices, your skin will look as if you have a mild sunburn. There will be some redness and flushing. How much of this you will have depends upon the number of passes we made over your treatment areas and the depth of the microneedle penetration. This flushing and redness usually is gone by the next day, so it’s a good idea to have microneedling done after work. Your skin will feel tight and you may have some slight swelling, but this passes after a day or two. You don’t have to restrict your activities.
When will I see results and how long will they last?
There is an immediate “glow” after your SkinPen treatment session, but this is an initial reaction of the skin to the punctures. These treatments at Behr really provide a progression of results, and the PRP boosts the regeneration mechanisms. Your collagen and elastin production ramps up and continues for weeks. Visible changes with the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Your results can continue to improve for up to six months.
Your results are permanent. The new collagen and elastin are real and they aren’t going anywhere. But your body continues to decrease their natural production with the passing years. That’s just a fact of the aging process. For that reason, continuing SkinPen microneedling treatments is a way to hedge new production against the normal decline.
How many treatments should I have?
Since your body builds new collagen, elastin, and skin cells, you need to give it time to get down to business. Our patients like to schedule microneedling with PRP in a series of 3-6 treatments. This provides great skin firming and improved texture. These treatments should be spaced about every 4-6 weeks, as this is about the duration of the increase in collagen and elastin.
What are the risks involved with microneedling?
The risks involved with our SkinPen microneedling with PRP are lower than other skin treatments such as chemical peels and fractional laser treatments. This is a very low-risk, safe procedure. At Behr Laser & Skin Care, we are very cognizant of safety. We use a completely new, sterile tip for the SkinPen with every patient, so there is no danger of contamination. Side effects after a SkinPen session include bleeding, bruising, and possible infection. But these are rare. Most patients simply have red skin for the remainder of their treatment day. This will likely fade to pink the second day and the skin may feel a little tight, but you can return to your normal activities with your regular makeup covering the pink skin.
