Tattoo Removal

Tattoos, just like diamonds, are forever. Or so they say. Nowadays, if you have a tattoo that you would rather not see for the rest of your life, or if you suddenly regret getting your boyfriend’s name permanently inked on your skin after a bad breakup, then you have the option of laser tattoo removal. (Insert sigh of relief here) So what goes on during this procedure that makes it possible for these supposedly permanent marks to go away? Here’s how:

  1. Protective eyewear will be given to the patient to use for the duration of the procedure.
  2. The patient may or may not opt to use anesthesia during the procedure. This will depend upon the location of the tattoo to be removed and the patient’s tolerance towards pain. Some patients choose to go with local anesthesia for the procedure.
  3. The type and strength of the laser to be used on the patient’s skin will be adjusted by means of an initial skin test.
  4. Once the effective wavelength has been determined, the doctor activates the laser and places the nozzle of the hand piece on the surface of the skin, directly on the tattoo that will be removed.
  5. As the laser works, the patient will feel pulses against the skin, which has often been described as similar to the snap of a rubber band.
  6. After each treatment session, an icepack will be applied onto the treated area to soothe the skin.

The duration of treatment and the number of pulses per treatment will depend upon the size of the tattoo. Regardless of size, however, laser tattoo removal will require multiple visits, with the tattoo growing progressively lighter after each session.
