If you have a pocket of fat that will not budge no matter how you eat or train, two options come up quickly: CoolSculpting and liposuction. They both reduce stubborn fat, but they are different in almost every way that matters, how invasive they are, how dramatic the result is, and how much downtime you take. Here is a straight comparison to help you think it through before your consultation in Fresno.
First, the honest headline
Neither one is a weight-loss treatment. Both are for contouring specific, diet-resistant areas on people who are already near a stable weight. If your goal is to lose a significant amount of weight, a medically supervised program is the right starting point, not either of these.
CoolSculpting: gradual, non-surgical, no downtime
CoolSculpting Elite freezes fat cells so the body clears them over the following weeks. It is non-surgical, needs no anesthesia, and most people read or work through the 35 to 60 minute session. Expect a gradual result: up to roughly a 20 to 25 percent reduction in a treated area, developing over one to three months, often across more than one session. Little to no downtime. Read the full detail on our
CoolSculpting Elite page. It is the better fit if you want a subtle change with zero time off and no procedure.
Liposuction: one procedure, a more dramatic change
Tumescent liposuction physically removes fat through a small cannula under local anesthesia. Because the fat is removed rather than cleared over time, the change is more immediate and more dramatic, and it is usually done in a single procedure. The trade-off is real recovery: drainage in the first 24 hours and a compression garment for 5 to 10 days. At our practice it is performed by Dr. Kathleen Behr, who has done several hundred liposuction procedures since 1994 and has taught the technique to other physicians. See the tumescent liposuction page for the full process.
Side by side

| Best for | Small pockets, no time off | Larger localized deposits, one-and-done |
How to choose
Three questions usually settle it. How much change do you want: subtle or dramatic? How much downtime can you take: none, or a week of taking it easy? And how do you feel about a procedure versus a device treatment? If you want no downtime and a gradual change, CoolSculpting. If you want a bigger change in one step and can plan around a short recovery, liposuction.
What we do at Behr
Both are performed at Behr Laser & Skin Care Center in Fresno. CoolSculpting is led by Jaycee Martin, an Allergan faculty trainer for the device, and liposuction by Dr. Behr. At your consultation we look at the specific area, your goals, and your schedule, and give you an honest recommendation, sometimes it is one of these, sometimes neither.

Both remove or eliminate fat cells for good, but weight gain can still enlarge untreated areas.
